Curvy, Curly, Conscious, OH MY!

Am I the only person who was obsessed with the sitcom, ‘Girlfriends’?  You all know what I’m talking about.  The show that gave us the Tracee Ellis Ross that we all know and love.  I’m more than sure that I wasn’t the only viewer who saw a little bit of each character in myself either.  Joan’s caring, nurturing maternal instinct and her need to love and be loved in returned.  Maya’s sass, loyalty, and hustler’s spirit.  Toni’s confidence, swagger, and no-non-sense attitude.  Lynn’s open mind, free spirit, creativity and wit.  Let’s not forget how we all could relate in some form or fashion to their “man problems”!  ‘Girlfriends’ taught me lessons of life, love, and relationships, but more importantly, it taught me the value of sisterhood.

The creator and founder of Curvy, Curly, Conscious – Shelah Marie – sets the intention for the evening’s event.

I attended an event this past weekend that reminded me just how valuable sisterhood truly is.  Curvy, Curly, Conscious – a self-love day party curated and designed by Shelah Marie – brought fellowship, food, and tons of fun to Atlanta!  The Curvy, Curly, Conscious experience promotes self-love, personal development, meditation, and physical wellness through beautiful and honest experiences that equip women of color with the tools and resources needed to become the highest version of themselves.  Curvy, Curly, Conscious was a place for black and brown women to be celebrated, uplifted, and inspired, and four hours later, I left feeling like a newer and better version of myself.

Upon arrival, I was greeted with a warm smile, receiving a t-shirt that donned the #CCC logo and a raffle ticket for giveaways.  The evening began with mixing and mingling over tea, coffee, water, and snacks, courtesy of Pienanny, who provided attendees with their original Chef’s Curry pie – and they even had it in a vegan version!  Talk about #winning!  There was also a create-your-own body scrub bar, where attendees could mix everything from olive oil, salt, white sugar, coffee grounds, brown sugar, and coconut oil to create a luxurious (and not to mention, good for you) self-care treat.

One bite of Pienanny’s curry vegan pie set my soul free, babes.  I was literally in the process of Snapping (that is, recording a video via Snapchat, for my mamas and aunties who aren’t technologically savvy) this experience mid-bite, and y’all, I was suddenly caught up in the rapture of curry.  This stuff is delicious!

Attendees also had an opportunity to receive complimentary massages  and had a chance to do a little shopping with the vendors that were on site.

The evening opened with a panel discussion with relationship coach, Dani Spikes (@lovecoachdanispikes), and make-up artist and creator of The Glamatory, MiMi J (@mimijonline).  These ladies gave us everything from how to develop the best relationship with yourself, how to avoid f*ckboys, how to be a mompreneur, and how to just glow the f*ck up in general.  Attendees had an opportunity to participate in breakout sessions with each panelist for a more intimate conversation on all the topics listed above plus some.

The panel discussion was followed by a real live trap yoga party, led by none other than Yoga Bae.  If you aren’t familiar with trap yoga, it is the combination of the physical practice yoga set to the sounds of trap music, a Southern hip-hop sort of music that is characterized by its booming bass and layered synthesizers.  Trap yoga is just as exhilarating, refreshing, and relaxing as any other type of yoga, except twerking is actually allowed and encouraged here.

Following a hot, sweaty session of trap yoga, Shelah Marie led attendees through a guided meditation.  Shelah Marie released her Meditation Mixtape in February of this year.  The mixtape is a guided meditation that is set to the sounds of smooth R&B, hip-hop, jazz, and neo-soul beats.  I personally began practicing meditation because of Shelah.  After downloading her Meditation Mixtape, I find myself listening to it whether I’m driving, at work, or even spending a few minutes in the sauna at the gym.  Shelah’s mixtape helps to take the “who-do-voo-doo” out of the practice of meditation, especially with her Four Part Breathing track.  If you have been struggling with insomnia, for any reason, four part breathing alone will have you sleeping like a baby!  I guarantee it!

The guided meditation session was followed by cupcakes, cocktails, and a power hour, which allowed attendees to eat, drink, shop, and be merry.  Oh, and thanks to DJ Empress Rah on the one’s and two’s, the dance floor was LIT!

Speaking of sisterhood, my publicist and big “little” sis joined me for the Curvy, Curly, Conscious festivities!  By the way, the filter washed out my eyebrows.  I really do have eyebrows y’all!  Just barely, but I do.

Honestly, Curvy, Curly, Conscious was a life-defining moment for me.  The love and happiness that filled Terminus 330 in Atlanta was all that I needed and more.  It felt good to be surrounded by women who were unabashedly being their true, authentic selves, and to be in a room where not one single side-eye or piece of shade was being thrown was, well…refreshing, to say the least.

Curvy, Curly, Conscious has already taken Miami, Chicago, and Atlanta by storm, selling out tickets in each city, and #CCC is off to Los Angeles next, the last stop on its four city tour.  So, to all of my babes on the West Coast, you can purchase tickets NOW to Curvy, Curly, Conscious LA by visiting the link here, and tell them that The Eduslaytor sent you!
